AHCA to Offer Falls Prevention Program to Assisted Living Communities
The Matters of Balance program is a best practice proven model with measurable outcomes, and the need for this program in assisted living is clear. Beginning in September, AHCA will be offering training to AL communities on how to implement the Matters of Balance Program.  Did you know that:

•    Up to 30% of community dwelling adults fall each year
•    About 20% of falls cause injury
•    Falls are a leading cause of injury and death for older adults
•    Falls are one of the leading causes of injury hospitalization
•    Falls are the top reason why litigation is brought against an assisted living community

Karla Averill, Director of Assisted Living for the Arizona Health Care Association has been trained as a Master Trainer and is certified to train coaches from AL communities who, in turn, implement the program within their community.  The Coaches training is eight hours and all training materials and videos are part of the program.  AHCA received a start-up grant from the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Foundation to assist with implementing the training program.  For more information, please contact Karla Averill at (602) 265-5331, or e-mail by at kaverill@azhca.org.
